LARVAL MASK WORKSHOP

Larval masks are an excellent tool for beginning studies in mask work and physical theatre. As a widely recognized form of physical theatre, larval mask work can be used in the classroom to encourage spacial and body awareness. It also fulfills curriculum requirements in character and scene development, improvisation and the study of an alternative form of theatre. Theatre Beyond Words specializes in the Larval mask style having created a critically acclaimed series of 12 non-verbal plays, The Potato People, with over 40 Larval masked characters.

Larval Mask workshops are available for elementary through post secondary school students as well as groups of professional performers.  Duration of workshops may vary.

THEATRICAL CLOWN WORKSHOPS

The red nose is the smallest mask in the world and is used in the study of theatrical clowning. This is not workshop on circus, birthday party or horror movie clowns. It is a joyous exploration of your own vulnerability and unique sense of humour. It shows you how to be comfortable taking risks on stage and how to listen to your audience, useful techniques for any style of acting. Company members have been teaching clown workshops for over 15 years and recently taught clown at Brock University.

Theatrical clown workshops are available for secondary and post secondary school students as well as groups of professional performers.  Duration of workshops may vary.

EXPRESSIVE MASK WORKSHOPS

Expressive masks are used widely throughout Canadian and international theatre. This category includes human-character masks, creature masks and emotional masks. These masks are more detailed in design then larval masks and can imply specific characters or characteristics. They are an excellent and engaging study tool for students in the classroom and can be used to fulfill many curriculum requirements in any grade. Theatre Beyond Words has been teaching credited courses focused on the study of Expressive masks for theatre and drama in education students at Brock University for 25 years.
